The University of Wisconsin-Madison
College of Letters and Science
Honors Program

Welcome to the College of Letters and Science Honors Program. We are delighted that you are considering attending UW Madison and participating in Honors within the College of Letters and Science. The Honors program has approximately 1700 students or about 10% of the total enrollment in the College. Our goal is to combine the best of a small college experience with access to world-renowned professors. In spring 2008 approximately 250 students graduated with Honors with 60 receiving Comprehensive Honors meaning they completed Honors in the Liberal Arts and Honors in the Major. Our Honors students have access to excellent advising, many small classes or discussions lead by faculty and opportunities for research and leadership that are detailed in this booklet.

Many Honors students go on to advanced degrees in academic fields or in law and medicine and many become outstanding scholars and leaders. For example, two of the top departments in the College, Chemistry and Communication Arts are currently led by UW Honors alumni and the person in charge of overseeing Animal Research on campus is also an Honors alumnus. Other alumni have major administrative roles in nonprofit organizations and corporations or practice law or medicine.

Wisconsin Honors students are not merely smart and creative, but they also care about their communities, their university and their world. We hope that our graduates will be among those who make a difference in the world. We know that you have the talent and the potential to be a leader and it is our goal to help you develop the skills and confidence that you need to be an agent of change for a better tomorrow.
We hope you would like to be a part of making our world a better place by challenging yourself intellectually, creatively, and culturally!

Chuck Snowdon, Faculty Director
