The Honors Student Organization (HSO) focuses its efforts in four main areas: community service, extracurricular social events, community building outreach, and professional development. Honors students are encouraged to initiate their own groups and projects that are supported and facilitated by the HSO advisor and officers.
The HSO plays a powerful role in shaping all aspects of the L&S Honors Program. HSO representatives serve on the Faculty Honors Committee, helping establish and oversee policies for the program. The HSO provides opportunities for students to meet faculty members outside of the classroom. The HSO also publishes a weekly e-mail bulletin ( Honors On-Line) of events on campus of special interest to Honors students.
In short, the HSO provides Honors students with an opportunity to extend what they are learning beyond the walls of the classroom to the larger world and, in the process, build a strong sense of community with their peers, faculty, and staff members. All UW students are welcome to join the Honors Student Organization and work together to create the best undergraduate experience possible at the UW.
How do I get active?
Contact a student representative according to your interests, visit this website, or read our Honors On-Line (HOL) newsletter for weekly updates of events and meetings. If you do not currently receive HOL, but would like to please visit the HOL subscription page on this site.
If you would like to subscribe to the Honors Student Organization e-mail list, please visit the HSO E-mail List page on this site.
How do I become a member?
If you're an L&S Honors student, you're already a member. You get to vote and run for the executive committee, you may request funds to support an HSO event or group, and you may also benefit from networking with Honors Alumni.
Is this an "Honors only" thing?
Not at all. HSO events and activites are open to all UW-Madison students. Come join us!
What kinds of events and activities does the HSO sponsor?
HSO is a co-curricular organization, so we focus on events and activities that contribute to the diverse intellectual, leadership, and service interests of Honors students.
